NEW KENT COUNTY, VIRGINIA – The first of three steeplechasing double-headers in Virginia was last weekend. Kicking off the action was Saturday's Strawberry Hill Races held at Colonial Downs just east of Richmond.
In the day's featured allowance hurdle, Irv Naylor's strong Maryland stable was represented by winner Tax Ruling. Irish professional Mark Watts steered the Kentucky-bred son of Dynaformer (also sire of three-time steeplechase champion McDynamo) to the lead in the early going, racing with Baby League much of the way. Tax Ruling outfinished Baby League from the last and held off Zozimus, who closed with a rush.
"I'm thrilled," Watts said of his first "big" American winner since coming to this country late last season. "The horse went great, and the course rode great." Watts works for Maryland flat trainer Graham Motion at Fair Hill, galloping in the mornings and schooling for several Pennsylvania 'chase trainers in the afternoons. "I like your American hurdles," Watts said of the standardized "national fences" all U.S. hurdle races are run over.
In the day's opener, a maiden claiming hurdle, Most Bossest (Padge Whelan up, in his first win of two on the day) went to the front at the first fence, opened a comfortable lead and held off Eagle Beagle, who rallied belatedly.
In the conditioned claimer, Kinross Farm's Humdinger (Liam McVicar up) was never worse than third while racing close to the pace, took the lead at the head of the stretch and proved best. Silent Vow was disqualified from third place when jockey Padge Whelan failed to weigh in after the race.
In the maiden special, Left Unsaid (Whelan) was rated well off the early pace, moved to within easy striking distance the second time around, jumped the last fence with Class Deputy and won going away.
At Sunday's Loudoun Hunt Point-to-Point held at historic Oatlands just south of Leesburg, Bequeathed (Patrick Worrall up) won his second featured Eustis Cup, Virginia's first four-mile open timber. Worrall allowed Nick Carter on Antonio Star, and Jake Chaflin on Rosbrian to control the early pace before moving to lead two fences from home. He won handily.
Junior field masters chase star Orpington (Mary Motion up) won by 12 lengths in his third win on the '09 season. The former hurdler came from the strong stable of steeplechase owner Gill Johnston.
