2018 OTTB 15.3h bay mare El Padrino - Simmerette by El Prado (IRE)
We don't typically change Jockey Club names, but we couldn't keep Lying Karen. Penny is not a Karen! She's very personable and wants her own person. We purchased Penny in May 2023 as a project/ lesson/ lease horse. She needed fitness and weight when we purchased her and took our time doing it. She is primarily ridden by a junior or amateur rider with occasional professional rides. She was on a half lease to an adult amateur who brought her young kids out to the barn. Penny allowed the kids to brush her and feed her treats. She can be hacked out by herself and ridden bareback with a rope halter. She's self-described as the "best of the bunch" - per an animal communicator session and it's true. Penny is also the source of many fun TikTok's with our farrier @umsteadfarrier.
Penny is the hack winner, jumps great, and has a lead change. She's shown in 18"-2' hunter and occasionally does the 2'-2'3" jumpers and lead line for fun. She recently moved up to the 2'6" TB and Low Adult Hunters. She is so soft and light in the mouth. She does not stop or have a hard spook. She will look outside of the ring and needs some prep at overnight horse shows, but does not need to school the jumps. This continues to improve with more training and going off property. We could see her being a nice 2'6"-3' hunter. In August '24, we had a judge pull her rider aside to comment that she recognizes the mare is green, but said she's a very nice horse and encouraged us to keep developing her.
No known lameness issues. Penny has a cold splint on the left hind and a bump on her right hind cannon bone. We currently have her barefoot in the front and rear shoes. We recommend that she stays in a program. Overall, Penny is fun and wonderful to be around.
Penny is measured at 15.3h, but she's not wide. She would be best for a smaller adult or a kid moving off of ponies onto a horse. Though Penny is little, she has a big enough step to make it down the lines.
This horse is a lot of fun to have in the barn and is going to be incredible with more horse show miles.
